GETTING TO HAINES
Fly Alaska Airlines to Juneau.
Delta Airlines now also offering flights to Juneau.
From Juneau take 45 minute flight on Alaska SeaPlanes to Haines.
Flights run six times a day. Check website for current pricing and schedule.
Be sure to COORDINATE YOUR ALASKA AIRLINES FLIGHT WITH YOUR SEAPLANES FLIGHT.
OR
Spend the night in Juneau and ride the 4 hour ferry up the gorgeous fjord on the Alaska Marine Highway. Ferry leaves Juneau early in the morning, check their website for up-to-date schedule and pricing. We think it’s wonderful to take the ferry. But it involves spending a night in Juneau with some trade offs:
Two Options if you’re going to stay the night in Juneau:
Option 1: Stay at hotel near the airport with free shuttle from airport and to ferry. But you’re a 20 minute taxi ride to downtown Juneau.
Option 2: Stay downtown with nicer hotels but no shuttle service to airport or ferry.
Hotels in Juneau
1. Best Western Country Lane Inn (or Best Western Grandma's Feather Bed)
Close to airport. Free shuttle service to and from Airport and shuttle to and from Ferry Terminal. You can find a decent price on Priceline. The downside is that it's not downtown and there isn't much to do around there. For the thrifty-minded traveler, this is a good option, and a $2 bus trip each way will get you into town for the evening.
2. Silverbow Inn
downtown. This is right in the middle of Juneau. Close to hiking trails, restaurants and shops. But the taxi from the airport and to the ferry is pricey: more than $40 each way. If you're adventurous, you could take the bus into town and walk to the Silverbow from the bus stop. It's not far. But there is no bus service to the Ferry Terminal.
3. Juneau Hostel
Also downtown. The savings on the room here might make the price for taxi worth it. It's a bit of a longer walk from the bus station to the Hostel, but that's also possible. Our friends who have stayed here have good experiences.
